Hi, I'm Monique

I started my career many years ago writing for parenting magazines, but even though I was working in an English-related field, I wanted more opportunity to share my love of reading. So, I became an English teacher. Since then, I’ve taught about 1,000 students. Funny, whip smart and occasionally infuriating, they have always been the best part of the job. But when it came to their parents, there was one thing most of them were worried about: their teen’s lack of reading. “My child used to love reading,” they’d say to me. “But now, it’s a battle.” As the years went on, the problem seemed to get worse; fewer and fewer of my students seemed to read at all. And so, I thought I’d do something about it. After years of advising worried parents, I thought I’d return to my journalistic roots and write a guide for them, sharing every insight, tip and practical tool I knew. What started out as an idea for a quick PDF guide (which does exist, and can be found here), quickly became an entire book, and indeed, now an entire project with a monthly newsletter and personalised advisory sessions offered too. Because it turns out, when you read the research, draw on years of practical experience as a teacher, and talk to dozens and dozens of your students, there’s quite a bit to say.
